Its Liberation Time - The Snowbirds are LEAVING!

It's that time of year again - finally!! Conventional wisdom has it that the bulk of the snowbirds leave Florida the Monday after Easter. Thankfully Easter is this Sunday so in only three days they should be pulling out of here!!! Not a second too soon either.

My friend Sue Paschall called from north of Atlanta yesterday to say that Interstate 75 was packed in the northbound lanes with all sorts of cars from Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and that state across the river from Wisconsin that has a purple football team with the traitorous quarterback. They were all headed NORTH!!!

Keep going. Good riddance. And take your horrific driving skills north with you. I sincerely hope that the clown from Ohio who stopped in the middle of Bonita Beach Road to read his road map does not come back this fall. Really. At least I was able to take that experience and turn it into a story in chapter 39 of my book "Minor League Heckler" so there was some good to come from the bonehead being here.

If it works like it did in 2009, by Tuesday morning the volume of traffic in Sarasota will have declined by at least 40 percent seemingly overnight. I hope its the same this year.

Once the snowbirds are gone Florida will return to some semblance of normalcy. I know, using "normal" and "Florida" in the same sentence is an oxymoron, but one can hope. It will stay normal until Thanksgiving when they all start coming back.

One thing that will be a definite advantage of global warming is that temperatures will stay warmer longer further north. With luck they won't come back to Florida in the winter when there are palm trees growing in Cincinnati in a few years.

That can't happen soon enough.
